Hesse’s earliest recorded ancestors were the Chatten or Chatti, a Germanic folk.
  They, along with the Cherusci, were the masters brothers of Germania before Roman domination. ‘Chatti’ became ‘Hessi’, from which originates the state’s name.
Situated in western-central Germany, its main city is Frankfurt 
The area of Hesse was settled by the Chattie  in  the 1st century BC and the name Hesse is a continuation of that tribal name.
in 1247-67 Hesse gained its independence and became a part of the Holy Roman Empire.
Then in the ‘Thirty Years War’ part of Hesse sided with Sweden and France.
- Then in 1776 - 1783 Hesse troops were sent to England to fight in the American War of Independence. Approximately 15,000 to 20,000 Hessians or Hessian-led mercenaries.
In 1866 another part of Hesse was annexed by Prussia, but In the war of 1866, it fought on the side of Austria against Prussia
after that In 1871 the rest of the Grand Duchy joined the German Empire, and during both world wars was occupied by France.
